What is Zantac?
The drug Zantac, also known by its generic name ranitidine, is commonly used to alleviate heartburn, acid indigestion, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), and gastric ulcers. However, in March 2024, the FDA issued a recall of Zantac due to the discovery of the carcinogen NDMA (N-nitrosodimethylamine) in the medication. In response to this safety concern, a reformulated version of Zantac called Zantac 360 has been introduced, which now contains famotidine instead of ranitidine. Famotidine is another type of medication that reduces the production of stomach acid.
Zantac Side Effects
While the commonly reported side effects of Zantac include digestive problems, headaches, and dizziness, the current litigation revolves around the alleged cancer-causing properties of the drug.
Ranitidine can cause various side effects besides cancer, with some of the more common ones including, headaches, fevers, vomiting and nausea, blurred vision and dizziness, skin peeling and rash, fatigue, hair loss, and Bronchospasm.
Companies that Failed to Warn the Public
Individuals who have suffered from cancer after taking ranitidine tablets from the below brands, may be able to pursue legal action:
- Zantac
- Novartis / Sandoz
- Apotex
- Rite Aid
- Walgreens
- Walmart
Manufacturers of Zantac and other similar products allegedly failed to disclose the presence of NDMA, a probable human carcinogen, in the medication. Individuals who used these medications for three months or longer and subsequently developed cancers such as esophageal, stomach, intestinal, liver, colon, uterine, kidney, bladder, or pancreatic cancer, may be eligible for compensation.
About the Zantac Lawsuit
Many people are taking legal action against Zantac and other drug companies because they failed to warn consumers about the presence of NDMA chemicals in their products. As a result, many individuals who have been using these medications have developed cancer, possibly due to the prolonged use of the heartburn medication.
People who have been diagnosed with associated cancers such as kidney, bladder, uterine, pancreatic, stomach, esophageal, liver, intestinal, and colon cancer may be able to seek compensation if they used Zantac or other related medications for three or more months before their diagnosis.

Settlements
In May 2024, pharmaceutical company Sanofi reached a settlement to pay a sum ranging between $200 million and $250 million to resolve more than 10,000 lawsuits. Additionally, in April 2024, they offered a $100 million settlement to resolve 4,000 lawsuits. Pfizer has also finalized agreements to settle over 10,000 lawsuits.
State courts
The litigation has transitioned its focus to state courts, where numerous lawsuits have been consolidated into a state court MDL (multi-district litigation) in Pennsylvania. In a significant development, in June 2024, Judge Vivian Medinilla of Delaware's Superior Court made a ruling affirming the credibility of evidence presented by plaintiffs who alleged developing cancer after using Zantac. This ruling paves the way for their cases to proceed to trial, indicating a pivotal step forward in the legal proceedings.
Pending cases
In July 2024, there were 2,422 pending lawsuits consolidated in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. However, the judge overseeing the MDL made a decision to dismiss all of the claims.
Zantac Legal Leads
Zantac, also known as ranitidine, had long been a popular choice for addressing heartburn among a significant portion of the American population. However, on April 1, 2020, the Food and Drug Administration issued a directive to halt the sale of Zantac. This decision resulted from the ongoing investigations by the FDA, which revealed that levels of the carcinogen nitrosamine in heartburn medication tended to increase over time. The FDA cautioned that storing Zantac at temperatures higher than room temperature posed a risk of cancer due to elevated nitrosamine levels.
